Be careful where you dig . . . but dig.

In New England there is a company called "Dig Safe." They assist diggers of all varieties, whether they be excavation companies, homeowners, utility companies and others, avoid the dangers inherent in digging holes. After all, digging can be quite dangerous, and it's best to contact an entity like Dig Safe before undertaking the dig. After all, there are things underground which can take one by complete surprise without an appropriate guide or map. And, when you dig too deep, it's best, as OSHA will inform you, to use a metal cage. It can save life and limb, which are necessities if one is to continue digging.
